Healthy Snacks for Kids that Nourish and Energize!
As the school bell rings and kids burst through the door after a long day of learning and playing, they’re often ravenous and ready for a tasty snack. Healthy snacks for kids offer an excellent opportunity to provide children with the nourishment they need to refuel their bodies and minds before tackling homework or engaging in extracurricular activities. During our “active season”, our kids have soccer practice at least four days a week on top of school work and other extra curricular activities so it’s important to have a variety of healthy after-school snack options that are not only delicious but also packed with essential nutrients to support both their physical growth and activity as well as overall development.
1. Veggie Sticks and Pita Chips/Pretzels with Hummus
Vegetables are a crucial part of a balanced diet, and pairing them with hummus makes for a delightful and nutritious snack. Slice up carrot sticks, cucumber, bell peppers, and celery and serve them with a side of homemade hummus and pita chips or pretzels. Hummus is a protein-rich chickpea spread that adds a creamy texture and makes munching on veggies even more enjoyable.

2. Nut Butter Apple Slices
Apples are a classic favorite among children, and when paired with nut butter like almond or peanut butter, they become even more enticing. Slice up apples into wedges and serve them with a small cup of nut butter for dipping. Nut butters are rich in healthy fats and protein, making this snack both delicious and satiating.

3. Mix and Match
I like to also provide my kids with a selection of healthy snacks. As shown in this image, snacks that cross nutritional categories can be huge success with kids as they like to have options. Here I include veggies, fruits (including fiber and vitamin C to name a few nutrients), nuts for protein and healthy fat, and of course the all important Pirate’s Booty. Swap out these selections for other nutritious items to keep it fresh and interesting. Trust me, your kiddos will be filled with excitement when they see this platter with options!

4. Homemade Popsicles (Special Treat!)
This one’s especially good when it’s hot outside (or anytime if you ask a kid :)) See my recipe for super easy and healthy fruit pops…. As with the mix and match platter, you can swap out the fruit type for your preferences and watch the smiles on your kids faces grow with excitement! This is also an easy one for them to help with!

Now you can feel great knowing that these snacks will not only support your family’s physical well-being but also sets them up for success in their school work and extracurricular activities. Planning and making healthy after-school snacks promotes a culture of healthy eating and shows kids that nutritious snacks can be just as delicious and enjoyable as any treat!
