5 Ways to Play Indoors on a Rainy Day
Rainy days can seem like a downer, especially when you have fun plans for outdoors, but they can also bring the opportunity for kids to use their imagination to find creative ways to have fun indoors and bonding time with each other. You can also break out the “boredom buckets” to find ways to play indoors. I’m not sure if it’s the mystery or surprise aspect of it all but for some reason, my kids find much excitement in drawing popsicle sticks with activities listed. Whatever the reason may be, I’m good with it! Here are 5 ways to play indoors on those rainy and dreary days.
1. Build a fort
Ok, so this one almost seems like a no-brainer. I mean, what kid doesn’t love to grab every single pillow, cushion, and blanket they can get their little hands and make a mess.. oops, I mean build a wonderful fort. Once they have every single square inch of the living room covered to their liking, that’s when the fun really begins. They can bring flashlights, books, toys, and games under their newly crafted roof and have at it or just relax and enjoy the fruits of their labor.
2. Play Cards
In this age of electronic devices, this one may be surprise but sometimes kids love an old-fashioned game of cards. This can almost be any card game from Uno to Go Fish, War to Old Maid, watch their faces light up as you break out the deck to play a familiar game or teach them a new one.
3. Hide and Seek
This is another oldie but goodie that the kids will enjoy and has many benefits. Not only does hide and seek provide physical activity but it also encourages creativity to be a good “hider” and effective problem solving to be a good “seeker”. In addition, both the “hider” and “seeker” but exhibit a certain amount of patience to be good at the game. Outside of these benefits, hide and seek is just an overall fun game especially on a rainy day or in the dark which can kick up the spooky fun element as well.
4. Play Board Games
Rainy days are perfect for dusting off board games and jigsaw puzzles. Playing games like Monopoly, Chess, and Guess Who are fun yet strategic while games such as Hungry Hungry Hippo and Candy Land can provide entertainment for all ages.
5. Arts & Crafts
To round out our 5 ways to play indoors on a rainy day is arts and crafts, which is always a great indoor activity! Gather some art supplies like colored paper, markers, glue, and scissors, and let your children’s creativity run wild. They can paint pictures, do origami, or craft their own unique creations. You’ll be amazed at what they can come up with!
